WKREC Locations
K-State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service. We are a partnership between Kansas State University and federal, state, and county government, with offices in all 105 Kansas counties. We conduct research through Kansas State University that is then shared by Extension agents and others on our Web sites and through numerous conferences, workshops, field days, publications, newsletters and more.
Kansas State University (KSU) agricultural programs include off-campus research units. These units are located strategically throughout the state to enhance contact with the people of Kansas, extend local services to clientele beyond the main campus, and broaden the focus to encompass a greater degree of diversity in climate and soil.
Research-Extension Centers
The off-campus research extension centers are organized into two departments: the Eastern Kansas Research-Extension Centers and the Western Kansas Research-Extension Centers.
The Western Kansas Research-Extension Centers (WKREC), one of several administrative units accountable to the KAES director, is composed of four sub-units, including:
- Agricultural Research Center (Hays)
- Northwest Research-Extension Center (Colby)
- Southwest Research Center (Tribune)
- Southwest Research-Extension Center (Garden City)
The geographical boundaries of the WKREC are somewhat arbitrary depending on the specific technology or application. The program generally addresses agricultural production needs in the 46 western-most Kansas counties bordered on the east by a line that starts at Smith County on the north and extends to Barber County on the south. Nevertheless, research results are commonly applicable statewide and beyond the borders of Kansas.
